Hot Metal specialists Flamefast have come up with a cool idea that will allow the innovative teacher to guide pupils from the design concept of a product idea to a finished product in a single lesson.
Simply by plugging into a standard wall socket, low temperature casting in lead-free pewter is now possible in any subject classroom with Flamefast’s LT1 Low Temperature Casting Unit.
“To go from design concept to a finished manufactured product in just one lesson in the same classroom is now possible,” said Steve Swinden, Managing Director of Flamefast. “Until now the innovative teacher has only been able to imagine a situation where pupils could see a complete process from concept to completion in one lesson. Now this is possible and the impact will be enormous on pupils’ understanding and results.”
“And, of course, the unit will allow pupils to design and make their own moulds which will not only allow “mass production”, so that every class member could take home a model or piece of jewellery, but also bespoke designs which solve individual design ideas.”
The new system has been under development for more than two years and makes pewter casting a simple and safe process. Initially aimed at students at KS3 and KS4, the unit is thermostatically controlled and operational within 15 minutes of being plugged into a 230 Volt AC socket in any classroom. There is no need for any extraction system as there is no fume danger from the unit.
For many years teachers have been seeking ways of bringing to life what pupils need to know and understand to achieve success in the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curriculum covering many subjects. This is particularly true in Design Technology but also in Science, ICT and Art. It is equally important in all areas of the curriculum where teachers wish to bring to life what is happening in the subject. All curriculum areas can be covered with the LT1 and every aspect of the curriculum benefits from the innovative development of cross-curricular activities.
Imaginative teachers can now bring subjects to life in three dimensions to excite and stimulate their pupils across the curriculum using Flamefast’s safe and unique process of low temperature moulding. Detailed models of artefacts, jewellery and historical and famous people can be easily created in the classroom with pupils being able to take home the models they have created.
Each Low Temperature unit comes complete with outline lesson plans and one mould to demonstrate the capabilities of the unit. Further ranges of moulds are available to enable teachers quickly to extend the use of the system across the whole curriculum.
